cities and the sky

Cities and the Sky…
Assisi
the rose colored limestone reflecting
its many moods

Beyond Cimabue, Giotto, and Lorenzetti, italia20.10 discovered other cities somehow held in this rich landscape.

  1. Mark,

    Again, great.

When building facades expand to a boundary they appear to me to be smashed up against an invisible surface. When that system is combined with the Italian "hill", the spaces between buildings take on distinction and purpose, thereby creating beautifully stitched urban fabrics. TA DA!!

When builders attempt to recreate Italian charm on flat suburban sites, it cannot be done. What ends up being created is simply a sign that points all the way across the Atlantic. Very much like the giant sign that is pointing to the next McDonald's. Only, instead of McNuggets, which are an over-processed form of food, you get some over-processed form of culture. The magic is missing.

All along, It was so simple.
